Take that time by yourself to get to know yourself and rediscover what makes you shine. Don’t surrender yourself to waiting, and don’t stay isolated for too long, because there’s a beautiful you the world is dying to meet.

Happy 38th birthday, Benedict Cumberbatch! (19/07/1976)But mostly, I feel, compared with Cumberbatch, like someone going through existence with the contrast dial turned down. To him, it seems, everything is neon bright. The barbs may sting more sharply, but his sun must shine that much brighter. - Stuart McGurk from British GQ (x)

Professor Slughorn, The Half-Blood Prince, Chapter 9, pg177
The significance of this quote is unimaginable. While there is no direct proof, I believe that this could be in reference to on of two significant events/characters. The first is Tom Riddle. Riddle had an obsessive love of the dark arts which drew him to become Lord Voldemort. Slughorn would have seen, what he originally thought to be a healthy curiosity for the dark arts, turn into obsession driven madness. But the more likely possibility would be Snape’s love of Lily. From what we gather in the books Slughorn knew Lily well, and most likely knew Snape well enough, due to him being in Slytherin and being so skilled at potions. He would have watched as Lily and Snape’s friendship turned from innocence to something darker. He would have seen the rift between them grow and as Lily grew away from Snape, Snape became more and more obsessed with the idea of Lily. Slughorn is not as ignorant or blind-sighted as he lets on, he would have seen what that obsessive love caused Snape to do; he would have seen him suffer but also be drawn into the allure of the dark arts. Slughorn knows about obsessive love, he watched its effects play out right in front of him.
